Wednesday Whim - Shiny Boxes

 images via CJWHO via FAHR

I've been on an outdoor art installation kick based on my last few Wednesday Whim posts (here and here) and this one today is no exception. This installation features dozens of shiny silver boxes suspended in the air (held together by string with clothespins). This piece called Estrutura de S. João is part an event for the Design Institute of Guimarães called Acorda! It's also a part of a local community workshop for Portugal-based project FAHR 021.3 , created by Filipa Frois Almeida and Hugo Reis (to explore "new concepts of ephemeral architecture, installation and urban art").  The particular installation represents a Portuguese street party where the reflective boxes serve as the typical party decor (ribbons, balloons, fireworks, etc.).

The whole experience of the installation seems pretty cool. The boxes are hollow and sway in the wind, reflecting light and energy. For lack of a better word, the experience seems magical and ethereal while still feeling real and low key. Check out the quick video below to see what I mean.

What do you think?

  1. That is so neat. It must be awesome to just sit there and admire the light & reflections that come from them.
