Wednesday Whim - Rainbow Room

With the recent Pride celebrations from last weekend and the Supreme Court's decision on gay marriage, a lot of buzz has surrounded the LGBT community. Whatever your personal opinions are on the matter, the rainbow flag has become synonymous with the community as a symbol of diversity, alliance and hope.

In 2012, Cape-Town (South Africa) based designer, Pierre le Riche, used the rainbow flag as inspiration for his art installation called Broederbond. The room is meant to serve as a discussion point for social issues surrounding homosexuality in Cape-Town as well as the culture in Cape-Town. Pierre le Riche wants people to investigate the definition and value of masculinity within society. The installation features a traditional Afrikaner living room during 1995's Rugby World Cup final (an important part of South Africa's history and culture). The colorful 11-mile rainbow colored thread weaved throughout the room is juxtaposed against the masculine sport on television.

The result of this installation is not only colorful and (for lack of a better word) fun to look at, the discussion Pierre le Riche wants people to have cannot be ignored. The world is perpetually changing and hopefully people can discuss this positively rather than negatively.

What do you think?
