There's nothing like the opulence that came from 18th century Europe. It's interesting to look at the dress, the social structure, the art, the mannerisms and the food. So leave it to Austrian photographer, Andreas Franke to recreate the magnificent lifestyle juxtaposed against the underwater decay of a ship (SS Stavronikita). In a photography series called The Sinking World, viewers must literally take a dive under water (78 feet) to view the images. The photos are held between Plexiglass with a stainless steel frame sealed with silicone to keep water out hung on the ship with magnets.
According to Andreas Franke
With my photographs of sunken shipwrecks, I want to pull the spectators into unreal and strange worlds. Mystified scenes of the past play within a fictional space. Dreamworlds you can get lost in or that you can identify with. This creates a new and unexpected atmosphere. This work shows very much of myself, since I am always on the lookout for stunning themes to create new images never been seen before.
Very interesting. Sort of like the Rococo art period under water :-)
