Wednesday Whim - Pencilism

all images via Federico Uribe

I'm always amazed at how ordinary things can suddenly become extraordinary. In this case, Miami-based artist, Federico Uribe creates extraordinary art with pencils. He either stacks them to create sculptures or lays them flat to create "paintings." The images are striking and thought-provoking but the minimal materials make it seem simple in nature.

The video at the bottom of this post reveals Federico's feelings about what he does and why he does it. Perhaps the most intimate point to me is when he states,

"...With time I learned that celebrating life was better than complaining about it, and so I do work that is intentionally celebrating life. Making people smile and remember that there is beauty out there, if you’re looking for it.”
