Did any of you read comic books as a kid? I wasn't a complete nerd about it but I had several collections and totally enjoyed going to the comic book store. My most girly collection was my Barbie comics...I even had one signed by the artist! But, I also loved the Spiderman, Batman and X-Men series. I loved reading them over and over again. Yea, I'm sure I wasn't a nerd about it.
This history lesson about me is a large reason why I'm so attracted to this art from Montreal-based Sandra Chevrier. She uses comics with male superheroes (i.e. Superman, Batman, The Green Lantern) to collage over the drawings of females. She covers up a majority of the face, leaving only the eyes or mouth exposed. It's a definitive message of female power - however you wish to interpret it. No matter the message you read into the art, the series is a beautiful one, albeit unconventional.
